My then 11yr old son and I wanted to do more upland hunting, but being from Arkansas, I needed a dog who would also be happy to retrieve waterfowl. Lots of research ultimately led me to wirehairs and a Idawire bred boy we call Luke. Luke… with all of the classic quirks of GWP’s… turned into a great hunting dog. I quickly realized that one was simply not going to be enough. I added a couple more and started consistantly hunting 5-7 states a year. We soon developed into a small pack of hunting and competition dogs. We found success in both field trials and the show ring. Why stop there??? With help from trusted friends and mentors Tom and Jodi Quesnell of Idawire GWP’s as well as the German Wirehaired Pointer Club of America, I started a breeding program. Every dog I breed will be bred with intention of pursuing “dual championship” meaning show and field. Shows test the conformation of the dog against a standard. A properly built dog should move efficiently and be structurally sound as intended. This proper structure leads to health- which in turn supports longer healthier days in the field. Field trials / Hunt tests focus strictly on the field performance of the dog. Field trials are true competitions where dogs win a placement. Hunt tests are exactly what they sound like and each dog gets either a passing or failing score at the test. Finn is the winner of the 2021 German Wirehaired Pointer National Derby Field Trial. His big range suits him equally well in wide open country and field trials. He’s not just about run though- he’s got a knack for hitting every objective along the way and has proven to be an excellent bird finder. Finn got to hunt Missouri, Kansas, Wyoming, South Dakota, Arkansas, and Oklahoma his first season out! Just like his littermate Rey, he’s got a great “off switch” and works hard to be my wife’s lap dog. Finn is built well structurally and finished his show championship easily. I can’t say enough about him. He’s a complete bird pointing, duck retrieving, deer tracking, hard headed GWP. Luke has no quit in anything he does. Luke has hunted across the central and western USA on 11 species of upland birds, not to mention his waterfowl and big game finds. He’s the ultimate “meat dog” and always on the ground when we’re wanting to fill the bird box. Luke does not run big enough win a field trial, but he is proof that a well bred GWP can become a fantastic hunting partner even with an inexperienced owner new to the breed.
